Living in Washington state for the last 6 years; I was born in Indiana in 1975 but have spent the majority of my life in the San Francisco, Bay Area. Primarily self-taught (tinkering with my Parent's Nikon FM some 20+ years ago), I began thinking more seriously about photography after taking a few courses at Napa Valley College. I quickly discovered a passion for B&W traditional darkroom work and, after acquiring printing skills in the community darkroom at NVC, built a personal darkroom in the only bathroom in my wife's & my loft in Emeryville, CA.
My first exhibit was at the NVC Photo Gallery. Shortly thereafter, I exhibited 2 photos in the (juried) Emeryville Art Exhibition in 2002. Additional achievements include: winning a themed "water" contest in PhotoLife Magazine; placing 2nd (w/additional Honorable Mentions) in the 4th annual B&W Spider Awards for my Golden Gate Bridge studies w/additional honorable mentions over some years; a 3rd place (w/many honorable mentions) in the 2007 IPA Photo Awards. I was shortlisted (of 250) for Photolucida, Critical Mass & was awarded a "Spotlight Interview" in B&W Magazine in 2008 (Issue 58). Additionally, I've sold many prints at "Photography West Gallery" in Carmel, CA.
More recently (2018-20), I received a Merit Award in the 20th annual juried art show at Northwind Arts Center in Port Townsend, WA - "Expressions Northwest", juried by Margaret Bullock (Curator, Collections and Special Exhibitions at the Tacoma Art Museum in WA). For 2020, I'm a selected "Showcase Artist" at Northwind Arts Center. My image "Waterplay" was selected for PhotoPlace Gallery's "Water: Element of Change" exhibition in Vermont by Juror Hannah Freiser (Executive Director at The Center for Photography at Woodstock in New York) ~ exhibition July 2 - July 25th, 2020... 10/27/20: Honorable Mention at IPA Photo Awards.
I'm a traditional photographer, in the sense, I print in a "wet darkroom". After capturing images on medium format (most often) and some 35mm film, using various film/manual cameras; I print, tone & finish my silver gelatin photographs in my home darkroom in Gig Harbor, WA.
In this evolving website a sample of some water work is shown ~ along with a new exploration, photographing Great Blue Herons on the Puget Sound. I've photographed all sorts of landscapes and have an extensive body of work on the Golden Gate Bridge which I look forward to working on again ~ new work and revisions of older negatives on the way...
My current work is available in 2 size editions, not to exceed 50 prints (total) of any image: 8" by 10" prints, matted to 16" by 16" (begin at $400); 11" by 14" prints, matted to 16" by 20" (begin at $550). Prices increase as an edition sells.
