Primarily self-taught (tinkering with my Parent's Nikon FM some 20+ years ago), I began thinking more seriously about photography after taking a few courses at Napa Valley College... I quickly discovered a passion for B&W traditional darkroom work and, after acquiring printing skills in the community darkroom at NVC, built a personal darkroom in the only bathroom in my wife's and my loft in Emeryville, CA.
My first exhibit was at the NVC Photo Gallery. Shortly thereafter, I was selected for, and exhibited 2 photos at the annual Emeryville Art Exhibition in 2002. Additional achievements: winning a themed "Water" contest in PhotoLife Magazine; top nod at the 2003 Nocturne Competition for my image, "CA Nocturne"; placing 2nd in Architecture for "Rail Detail", Golden Gate (w/additional Nominations) in the 4th annual B&W Spider Awards for my Golden Gate Bridge studies; a 3rd place (w/many honorable mentions) in the 2007 IPA Photo Awards. I was shortlisted (of 250) for Photolucida, "Critical Mass", and was awarded a "Spotlight Interview" in B&W Magazine in 2008 (Issue 57); https://www.bandwmag.com/back-issues/bw-no-57 . Additionally, I've sold many prints through Photography West Gallery in Carmel, CA, a former representative of my work, and the top gallery representing photographers working in traditional/non-digital ways.
More recently (2018-24), I received a Merit Award for my Seaside image, "Alongside Hercules", in the 20th annual juried art show at Northwind Arts Center in Port Townsend, WA - "Expressions Northwest," juried by Margaret Bullock (Curator, Collections and Special Exhibitions at the Tacoma Art Museum in WA). For 2020, I was a jury-selected "Showcase Artist" at Northwind Arts Center. My image "Waterplay" was selected for PhotoPlace Gallery's "Water: Element of Change" exhibition in Vermont by Juror Hannah Freiser (Executive Director at The Center for Photography at Woodstock in New York) ~ exhibition July 2 - July 25th, 2020... 10/27/20: Non-Pro Honorable Mention at IPA Photo Awards for my Great Blue Heron studies in the film category. 10/14/21: 2 Professional Honorable Mentions at IPA Photo Awards for my Golden Gate Bridge Series. Nominated at Black & White "The Spider Awards" 2022 for "Luminous Gate" - Golden Gate Bridge in the Architectural category. Nominated at Black & White, "The Spider Awards" 2023 for "Shell's Birds; On the Beach" in the Wildlife category; Nominated at Black & White, "The Spider Awards" 2024 for "Under the Gate"in the Architectural category....
6 of my Great Blue Heron studies (GBH - on 16" by 20", matted/framed to 20" by 24") were exhibited at Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend, WA, Feb 2023......
"Before the Rain" is included in the John Hagefstration Collection at the Birmingham Museum of Art: https://www.artsbma.org/collection/before-the-rain/
I'm a traditional photographer; I print in a "wet darkroom". After capturing images on medium format film (and, sometimes 35mm) using various manual cameras, I personally hand-develop my negatives and print, tone, and finish my silver gelatin photographs in my home darkroom.
My work is available in 3 size editions, not to exceed 50 prints (total) of any image: 8" by 10" prints, matted to 16" by 16" (begin at $400); 11" by 14" prints, matted to 16" by 20" (begin at $600); 16" by 20" prints, matted to either 22" square or 20" by 24" depending on the image being square or rectangular ~ or to your request, please let me know; (begin at $800) ~ prices increase as an edition sells.
